Autodesk AutoCAD Skills
I taught AutoCAD-based engineering graphic courses at Santa Ana College, Orange County, California, for 7 years as a part-time instructor (2000-2007). AutoCAD is great for learning the principles of 2D engineering drafting, especially the rules of orthographic projection, thanks to its excellent 2D drafting tools and settings; thus, the program has obvious advantages over all others for learning the basic principles of engineering drafting. Since most, if not all parametric modeling programs, do not feature tools and settings to automatically generate oblique drawings, which are used in the 3D presentation of furniture and plates with true shape (TS) frontal surface, using AutoCAD to draw oblique views is a practical option. However, for 3D modeling and automatic generation of 2D views from 3D models, parametric programs such as Inventor, SolidWorks, CATIA, are better options and are more widely used in industry for consumer product and mechanical engineering design. Therefore, this page only displays examples of 3D models I created for classroom presentation, images of PowerPoint files on orthographic projection and for geometric construction (also for classroom presentation only, NOT for industry use), and of pages in my descriptive geometry and sheet-metal design textbook that cover AutoCAD tools.
Additional samples of drawings made in AutoCAD are available in the Architectural and Interior Design Drawings page.
